There's a new (?) conspiracy theory that finally hit mainstream media today: Hillary's Surprise, a news article wherein the New York Sun posits a plausible scenario whereby Hillary Clinton could win the Democratic nomination in 2 weeks. The Sun notes that they believe the chances of this occurring are small, but they seem to be passively endorsing or suggesting it.
Published using FREE HitRSS

Here is what may be the final irony of the Democratic presidential contest: even though it appears Barack Obama has solidly won the nomination, Hillary Clinton can still make or break his candidacy. This puts her in a very precarious position, however, where she also stands a chance of ruining her own career. Clinton was unequivocally clear that she was making no decisions the night of the final primaries, and has remained officially mum so far today. She and Obama are both in Washington addressing the AIPAC conference followed by a stop in the Senate for a budget vote. No doubt there will be a private sit-down before the end of the day.

Clinton is not out of options, although many of them are undesirable. Regardless, she has the leverage to get just about any concession she wants. Here are a few:
Published using FREE HitRSS

As I read in some blog comment recently, "It aint over til the lady in the pantsuit sings." Tomorrow, June 3rd will mark the conclusion of the Democratic presidential primaries when South Dakota and Montana go to the polls. As I predicted, quite some time back, neither Clinton nor Obama will finish tomorrow with enough delegates to claim the nomination. Instead, the contest will be handed over in total to the superdelegates. By my math, Clinton would have to sway virtually every uncommitted delegate to her campaign in order to win. However, I wouldn't be quick to say it couldn't happen.
Published using FREE HitRSS

I find it sickening and disheartening that the overwhelming sex-based hatred toward Hillary Clinton in this campaign has been so shamelessly glossed over by the media, while simultaneously, Barack Obama has been sheltered from racist attacks, and the media has blown up every race-related issue. Even saying, "Obama has a problem with the white vote," gets you accused of being racist even though it is a simple statement of fact based on voting results.
Published using FREE HitRSS

If I were a strategist for Camp Clinton, I would be overjoyed right now.

First of all, how much lower could the bar be set? The punditry has declared the Democratic race over, in an authoritative tone unseen before now. Obama's campaign is floating the idea that "letting the rest of the primaries carry out" (oh thank you for your permission) is now a good idea because it is somehow (all of a sudden) good for the party. Superdelegates are now talking about the "dream ticket." Even Clinton's campaign is letting serious "she knows it's over" rumors leak. (And, I think we all know, these leaks are not uncontrolled.) Hillary's done. It's over. She can never win now. (Sounds awfully familiar to me...)
Published using FREE HitRSS

This has got to be the quietest post-primary day of the cycle. There is a palpable hush across the media feeds, and both Democratic campaigns. A broad Google search for either "Hillary Clinton" or "Barack Obama" produce a paltry handful of results less than 12 hours old. Not even a handful really, one each. I am on at least a dozen Clinton-friendly mailing lists and about half that many Obama lists, and I have not gotten one email from either of them this morning. Normally, it's about one each or more per day, ready for the 8-9am readers. Even the crackpots at MoveOn are silent this morning (note that they spent their day yesterday trying to convince me to play the "Bush-McCain Game," like anyone who supports MoveOn needs reminders of their similarities.) Nothing from the DNC mailing lists.

It's like people are surprised by the results from North Carolina and Indiana, stunned even.
Published using FREE HitRSS

Is Clinton the Real Unifier?

I have long been saying that voters are considering presidential hopefuls Obama, Clinton and McCain on a Liberal-Moderate-Conservative scale, in that order, independent of party affiliation. McCain is playing a balancing act, putting his "maverick" image out to the public and courting the conservatives on the inside of the GOP. Obama, on the opposite end, is challenged to maintain his liberal image without seeming too divorced from the bread-and-butter concerns of middle America. This allows Clinton to slide right in between them and frame herself as the true "compromise candidate." It also opens her to attacks on all sides. Liberals slam her for doing what you are supposed to do in a presidential campaign: use your resources to win; conservatives slam her for her obvious departures and disagreements with how Republicans have been running the country for the last 8 years.
Published using FREE HitRSS

I have waited a few days to comment on the reemergence of Jeremiah Wright into the Democratic campaign schematic. When I first watched Wright's comments on Monday, April 28th at the National Press Club in Washington D.C., something strange happened to me. I first discovered there was a new Wright splash by reading a news article from a Google search for "Barack Obama," something I do daily. Reading the headlines, it started to dawn on me, This is serious. As I read further, I realized I needed to go find the video and watch it, hear the tone of voice, see the body language, make a judgment on my own before I read much more opinion. I am skeptical of all news, I needed to see it for myself.
Published using FREE HitRSS

Let me begin by saying, "Bravo," to Sen. Obama. I just watched his speech in Kokomo, IN yesterday, replayed on CNN. Not only was it a good speech, but it was very excellent sportsmanship, something I find a critical component to fairness. He stated his support for party unity in the General Election, praised Sen. Clinton, then moved on to highlight their similarities, saying any differences between the two Democrats "paled in comparison" to their shared differences with Sen. McCain. I also watched Sen. Clinton's speech in Bloomington, and while she was clearly contrasting herself with Obama rather than McCain, she stuck to the issues. I believe both Democratic candidates have shown responsiveness to the negative effects of negative campaigning -- they've "listened to the boos," so to speak. Both of them should also be allowed a little forgiveness if they do spat here and there. Regardless of how either campaign tries to spin it, their primary opponents are still each other...
Published using FREE HitRSS

So, Sen. Obama claims to be the Great Unifier. Much of his campaign is premised on drawing people together, working for shared prosperity and shared goals. This is code for, "I will encourage and employ bipartisan policy in my Presidency." Ignoring the fact that, in our current political climate, this means huge disagreements, massively organized power struggles and endless bickering about balance and representation... I find it curious that Sen. Clinton is getting slammed for using "Republican" tactics in her Democratic campaign. Further, I find it curious that she is getting slammed for already being closer to the center than Obama. I wonder exactly what the Most Liberal Senator In America's plan is for drawing the GOP into his loving embrace? ...
Published using FREE HitRSS

On thing the Pennsylvania primaries made very clear: the GOP really is going to have to struggle to keep up. Both Democrats each individually drew more votes yesterday than the total Republican voters between all GOP candidates (Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee were both on the PA ballot for the GOP, and got crushed by McCain, of course.) Just over 804,000 voters participated in the GOP primary, versus 2.3 Million voters on the Democrat side. That means Democrats outnumbered Republicans at the polls almost 3-to-1.
Published using FREE HitRSS
