Fundraising - AFA Casino March 12-13, 2009

Hello everyone,

I am just writing again as I know how busy the holiday season can be. Volunteering for the AFA casino, or forwarding this information on to your club members, may have slipped your mind. However, the AFA needs to submit its casino license to Alberta Gaming, including its volunteer schedule and the forms for its key position volunteers in early January. We need your help to fill the volunteer slots!

Remember, the AFA casino provides the AFA with funds to purchase tournament equipment (including new pistes, one of the things the money earned at this casino will purchase), to ship tournament equipment around the province, to pay coaches at the AFA camps, to pay for the AFA website, and a variety of other things that allow the AFA to continue to work to support and promote fencing in Alberta.

Also remember that 10% of the proceeds of the AFA casino are set aside for the clubs that provide volunteers, and that the more volunteers your club provides, the greater the share of that 10% you receive! The volunteer amount for the last casino was $202! The funds will be forwarded to you in the form of the donation, after which there are no restrictions on how you spend that money. No receipts are required, and the AFA is happy to help support the clubs financially when we can!

Please forward this email out to your club, or organize with your club to provide volunteers for a shift at the casino. Have your forms back to me as soon as possible, but no later than 5 January! Your help is truly appreciated!

Thanks,

Vanessa

Subject: AFA Casino: Calgary 12-13 March 2009: Volunteers needed!

Hello everyone,

It’s that time again! Time for the Alberta Fencing Association Casino! This time, the casino will be held at the Elbow River Casino in Calgary on 12 and 13 March 2009. This puts it immediately before the Calgary Open on 13-15 March, which may afford some of the out of town individuals coming for the tournament an opportunity to volunteer and get funds for their clubs that they otherwise might not be able to!

The AFA casino helps the AFA pay for things like coaches at camps, the shipping of our tournament equipment, purchase of new tournament equipment, maintenance and development of the AFA website, the AFA’s liability insurance (which covers every registered club and member in the province), and a host of more mundane items like office supplies and phone bills.

Once again, I’d like to lay out for you how the AFA provides funds to the clubs that provide volunteers for the AFA Casino. The AFA sets aside 10% of all the casino proceeds as a donation fund to the clubs that provide volunteers. That 10% is further divided by the number of shifts at the casino (this time 38 shifts), to provide a total amount per shift. Last time, the shift amount was $202! That meant for every one person working one shift at the AFA casino, the club received a $202 donation from the AFA! Conservatively, I estimate that this casino will bring in $85,000 for the AFA. That means at least $8,500 will be set aside for the clubs that provide volunteers, with an estimated shift donation fo$223.68. Consider if your club provided even three volunteers for three shifts: $671.04! Consider too if the casino proceeds are even larger than I estimate!

I have attached the AFA volunteer form as well as the Alberta Gaming form that your club members will need to fill out to volunteer. However, I will be at the CSC in Calgary starting Thursday, and will have forms with me. Anyone can stop by the DT to see me and fill out a form if they’d like to volunteer!

Thank you, everyone, and I hope that we can make this casino a successful one for both the AFA and Alberta clubs!

Vanessa
